Headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, Dominion Transmission, Inc. (DTI) is a gas transmission subsidiary of Dominion Resources Inc. DTI is an interstate natural gas pipeline providing gas transportation and storage services.
Dominion Resources operates one of the largest underground natural gas storage systems in the United States, with links to other major pipelines and to markets in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. We maintain 7,800 miles of pipeline in six states and store and transport large quantities of natural gas for customers, including major utilities and power plants. DTI is also engaged in production, products extraction, and is a supplier of natural gas liquids at one of the largest extraction plants in the East.
The Dominion Cove Point LNG (DCP) Terminal is located on the Chesapeake Bay south of Baltimore in Lusby, Maryland. Dominion Resources, Inc. acquired Cove Point from Williams on September 5, 2002, and began receiving ships in the summer of 2003. In 2009, Dominion finished an expansion project that increased Cove Point's storage and production capacity by nearly 80 percent.
The most efficient way to transport natural gas across the ocean is to liquefy it and transport it in specially built ships. The DCP Terminal is strategically located where it can receive transport vessels, store the LNG onshore, and then convert it back to gas when it is needed to meet demand. As a significant addition, Dominion is also constructing liquefaction facilities for exporting liquefied natural gas at the DCP Terminal. Applications for natural gas exports to Free Trade Agreement and non-Free Trade Agreement countries have been approved by the U.S. Department of Energy.
